Petey needs a furever home!

Petey's owners lost their home and left him behind. My mother lives next door and has spoken to the landlord to buy Petey sometime. The landlord WILL take Petey to a shelter if no action is taken soon!

What we know....
Petey is 4-6 years old, he's a shepherd mix, he's neutered, currently living in a privacy fenced in yard with food & water (thanks to Mom) and shelter (utility closet left open for him).
Mom's yorkie mix wiggles thru the fence nightly to play with Petey and he's very gentle with him. Petey likes kids. Loves riding in the car and LOVES playing fetch with a ball or a Frisbee. Prefers soft squeaky toys to ropes are rubber toys.
He is curious about cats but doesn't chase them and if now wary of my cat because the cat hit him in the nose.
Is fine with larger dogs until they try to show their dominance over him and he growls but walks away.
He doesn't come in unless you ask him in the house; they use to let him in the house when they were home so we're assuming his is housebroken AND he is, NO accidents in the house all weekend. They usually left him alone in the backyard where away but there's no dog house for him.
He's very sweet and very big; he’s also smart and very trainable, though he’s obviously been worked with before with such manners already.



3/26/10 Last night Petey was so gentle, he let me open his mouth look at his teeth, took his dewormer with no hesitation, didn't mind the 7-way shot or that I was feeling all over him for injuries, didn't mind his feet messed with... listens/minds very well! Let us take a raw hide from him repeatedly with no reaction. I am going to give him a bath today and plan to take him ASAP for a rabies shot and to be HW tested.


3/29/10 Petey spent the weekend at my house with my small dogs and cat. We had not accidents, had no issues with his bath or blowing him dry. He does growl if one of the little ones tried to steal his raw hide or eat with him in his bowl so I removed all raw hides and feed him separately. Otherwise gentleman manners. Sleeps next to the bed all night, stays close to me no matter what I'm doing. Walks well on a leash and I haven't heard him bark. When the cat slapped him he yelped and now avoids the cat. He met an Am. Bulldog and was fine with him until the Bulldog tried to stand on Petey's back and Petey growled and walked away and wouldn't play with him anymore. I think the bath, stairs in my house and the 45 min walk Saturday made him sore because he was a little stiff Sunday morning but I think in two days he's had more attention and activity than he has in a LONG time. Loves playing Frisbee and can catch really well. Very smart, learned to open the baby gate that's 42" tall or jumped it to sleep by the bed instead of staying in the kitchen. He takes treats from my hand very softly, loves to be patted and petted, not a licker, will wait outside of the kitchen while you eat, doesn't beg... If I had the room I'd keep the sweetheart! he’s going to a temp foster home tonight.

Bella

Well my vet said they prefer not to spay Bella until she's 5lbs or a year old but unfortunately Bella turned 9 months and came in heat so she's in "panties" that she's not too fond of and she's only 4.5 lbs. I was hoping she wouldn't have to go thru this but now I've spoken with them again and she may never reach 5 lbs so she's scheduled to be spayed March 24, 2010 which will make her 9.5 months and 4.5 lbs but I don't want her to have to continue to come in heat and she obviously doesn't feel well (puppy cramps and general icky-ness I imagine). So, she's stopped showing color and next week is the big day....finally!

Bella went thru her surgery just fine, we had to go back Friday to get an antibiotic shot but she's healing nicely and playing and running around like she usually does. Relieved its all over

Heroic Dog Shot 5 Times While Protecting His Family

LOS ANGELES-- "Champ" the four year old German Shepherd mix was shot and badly hurt while protecting his family's home, and was scheduled to be euthanized after weeks of being kept as evidence.

Now he needs help.

On February 27th, Champ was shot 5 times by an intruder as he tried to protect his owner's home in South Los Angeles, says Tiffany Norton of Coastal German Shepherd Rescue.

The shooter lodged several bullets in the dog's body, leaving Champ with a broken jaw bone, nerve problems, a bullet entry under his eye, and wounds covering his neck, shoulder, and abdomen.

Champ was kept as evidence while the intrusion case was pending, and was scheduled to be euthanized because his owners declined to get him the costly medical care he needed.

That's when Coastal German Shepherd Rescue stepped in.

The charity group picked Champ up Friday and transported him to their veterinarian team at Alicia Pet Care Center.

According to Norton, Champ is getting a "full body work up" and the organization will soon know what Champ's medical plan will be.

Veterinarians working on Champ say he is very lucky the bullets went through his body, and that he will likely not suffer any long term medical problems from the shooting.

Norton says that Champs medical bills are adding up and her organization is asking for help to save pay them.

Better yet, Coastal German Shepherd Rescue is looking for someone to adopt Champ and give him a good home after he recovers.

"It's gonna be a really special person who's gonna bring him into their home," Norton said. "Really right now, we're looking for someone with a big heart who wants to support Champ."

Volunteers for the charity organization say despite all he's been through, Champ is still a very sweet, calm, and collected dog who will "give his paw to all who would stop and give him a pet and a hello."

Leprechauns

I know it is very close to St. Patty’s day but the last few weeks have been full of small people in my life…

Last week, while in Houston, TX, Adam calls to tell me he received a call from one of his customers inquiring if their leprechaun was in their yard when he was there. He said it was when he left but sometime in the 2 hours since he’d left someone had stolen her yard leprechaun!

This past Friday night Michael (my brother) met Adam and I at Sensations off Derby to see Sassie Cassie, a 2’9” stripper - very weird experience, don’t plan to ever experience it again- EVER!

Earlier this week one of Adam’s friends told him their mutual friend’s family had a run in with a “leprechaun”! The story goes… the friend was at work and his son, who has Down syndrome, that’s in his late teens-early 20s, called and said he’d “caught a leprechaun” and he’d locked it in the closet. So he calls his wife (who was out for a short period) to tell her and the two of them met at the house. Well, when they get home there had been a door-to-door Jehovah’s Witness who happens to be a little person in a suit that their son had mistaken as a leprechaun, locked him in a closet and pushed a desk in front of the door. Luckily the man was VERY understanding and didn’t press charges due to their son’s misunderstanding of what a “leprechaun” is or lack of understanding of small people. UPDATE: Adam's friend was messing with him and this isn't true! Why men like to trick each other...I will never understand.

Again I know St. Patty’s is next week but this is crazy! People all over are dressing up lawn creatures in green top hats and coats or bows. Adam says there’s a manatee mailbox in his route (yes we live in Birmingham not Mobile so I’m not sure how a manatee mailbox fits in the neighborhood) that’s dressed in green; there’s a concrete rabbit on my way home with a GIANT green bow around its neck and there’s multiple others!

When I was a child we decorated the yard for Halloween and Christmas…now people need a very small excuse to go decorating crazy in their yards! NUTS!

Ok so right now is stressful- getting the house ready to sell, looking for houses in Houston, TX, working in Bham and Houston, flying back and forth- the whole time needing to be in the other city SO of course my hands would freak out (and break out) so now they're stiff and bandaged and I spent 2 hours at the doctor Monday (why bother making an apt when the dr isn't concerned about keeping it I will never know) but after tests and blood work and 4 RX I don't have a staph infection in my right hand and I'm suppose to take my antibiotics and steroids (poor Adam) and in a week or so I should be back to normal with brand new skin on my hands. Thank goodness my feet decided to sit this one out. It's been 4 years since I had a break out like this...wonder if its a sign of what to come? Maybe I should start embracing this chapter in Houston? Maybe I should find that silver lining I usually see immediately that must be VERY thin... :(
