Happy Adoption Day Cameron

6 years ago today I adopted Cameron because he was scheduled to be PTS 12/24 because he was "old". He was taken to a kill shelter because his mom (she'd gotten him at 6-8 weeks old) had died and her human kids didn't want him. He's a purebred Lhasa Apso that was thrown away!

Since I was raised with Lhasas (my parents showed them in the 70s-80s) I refused to let this happen so I drove to Scottsboro with Bayleigh and we brought him home. I wasn't looking for a friend for Bayleigh but couldn't allow him to be PTS on Christmas! I hope my family would respect me and the love I have for my furbabies to never think to dump them at a kill shelter if something were to happen to me. These adult children of this poor elderly woman should be ashamed of themselves and obviously didn't respect their mother or the love she had for her dog.

(L to R) Bayleigh, Oscar (both Shih Tzus) & Cameron (Lhasa Apso)

Anyway, happy adoption day Cammie! By the vets' guesses he's 11-14 years old now, he doesn't know it or act it and I'm privileged to have given him the years we've had together and blessed to have him in my life.

PL&DPRescue's newest addition Lola PB Pekingese

Lola is new to PL&DPRescue, we had her vetted Friday 6/10/2011 and she’s approximately 4 years old, HW-, fecal -, spayed, up to date… she’s house broken, good with other dogs (ignores them mostly). BUT Lola’s rib cage is shaped oddly; she walks with a hop or skip. She also has a cyst on her hip that the vet will attempt to drain; she has some congestion on both lungs and an ear infection in one ear (neither contagious). She went to a temp foster over the weekend as the vet boarding environment was stressing her out and causing her breathing to be more labored and she slept the entire weekend, the foster had to wake her to make her potty & she didn’t eat until Monday morning. She’s on two antibiotics and eating much better now.

She has now been x-rayed and as it turns out she has suffered from a good bit of trauma at some point and now she’s healed improperly but nothing can be done at this point. Her ribcage was broken (very likely stomped, kicked or crushed) and she wasn’t given medical attention as it has healed completely incorrectly. Due to the way the ribcage has healed her heart is now leaning laterally to one side (should be in the) and at an odd angle causing her to have labored breathing because the heart is pushing on one lung. Pekingese are known for breathing issues and this only intensifies this inherited issue. She also has shallow hip sockets and floating patellas so she walks with a little hop.

The vet says there’s nothing that can be done but limit her stress levels, to not to let her get overly excited, over heated and possibly keep her at a healthy to slightly thin weight; the rescue feels she should be in a home with no children or older children that understand what precautions Lola needs; she may do better as the only dog or only one other dog too. She hasn’t been cat tested. She seems to crave human attention and affection. She rubs on furniture, walls and legs like a cat. She’s very sweet but needs support when being carried. She currently finds her crate as a safe haven for naps but prefers a lap above all else.

Lily the mini-Schanuzer fights for her leg from spider bite

Peace, Love & Dog Paws Rescue & Lily NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Lily was bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider
(Warning pictures below are graphic)

Lily has been in the rescue since January 2011, she was apparently part of a backyard breeder &/or neglected until she was surrendered to the shelter with rotten teeth, heartworm positive and had hematomas on both ears that all have been addressed. She recovered quickly from having her ears fixed, teeth pulled and on going slow HW treatment. She’s a 7 year old mini Schnauzer that was VERY fearful of men BUT in the months in her foster home she’s come out of her shell and is a sweet loving companion. Lily had a furever home waiting on her BUT the day before she was to be transported to her home she was bitten by a BROWN RECLUSE SPIDER.
NOW the rescue & Lily have months of vet bills to save Lily’s life and her leg. We need your help to offset the vet bills while Lily recovers.
Below are the graphic pictures of her progress so far. As long as there is tissue rejuvenating there’s hope for her leg. Every 48 hours we take Lily to the vet for a wound cleaning/bandage change; once the tissue has filled in then a skin graph (surgery) will be required to close the opening. This process will take weeks, possibly months! If the tissue doesn’t continue to make progress or dies we will have to amputate her leg at the shoulder.
Lily is currently in our special needs foster home on crate rest and antibiotics and pain meds to ease this process as much as possible. Though Lily must be in a great deal of pain & stress she’s still very loving, wanting to cuddle when she’s not sleeping; with her spirits up & her progress, we’re VERY hopeful we will save her leg!

Barron -has a foster-to-adopt lead so he won't be in the rescue long :)

Baxter -needs socializing and will need to go to an experienced foster (hopefully Bella & Sophie's foster will open up soon)

Zoe -loves to play; she's good with other dogs and would be amazing with children

Shadow -scared of storms but a loving older boy

Lily -Lily's current foster can only foster her a few more weeks before she will not be able to foster for a few months. Lily is more a woman's dog and not a high energy Schnauzer

Can't keep your pet?

PLEASE SHARE!
SPAY & NEUTER PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE ALL OVER TO HELP WITH THE OVER POPULATION AND IN THE END TO HELP PREVENT THE BELOW POST IN THE FUTURE

This is why I support spay & neuter programs, local rescues, animal control, humane societies because every dog, cat, critter I save, foster or crosspost is an opening for another poor soul to hopefully have another day to find it’s furever home. I have held a dog while it passed away; tried to sooth its pain while it was suffering; have saved many but failed so many others because there’s just NOT ENOUGH rescuers, fosters, adopters for them all but I take pride in every single life saved! My furbabies are rescues, all have a story and all are alive today because someone stepped up and saved them!
Humans domesticated dogs therefore it is our responsibility to provide for them. Please read the below post!

This is a post off Craigslist
Can't keep your pet?

You can't keep your pet? Really? By A Shelter Director

I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will. First off, all of you people who have ever surrendered a pet to a shelter or humane society should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would stop flagging the ads on craigslist and help these animals find homes. That puppy you just bought will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. Just so you know there's a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it’s dumped at? Purebred or not! About 25% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into a shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses: "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving too that doesn't allow pets? Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog".

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door. Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are.

If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because the shelter gets paid a fee to euthanize each animal and making money is better than spending money to take this animal to the vet.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down". First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 shelter workers depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a shelter worker who we call a euthanasia tech (not a vet) find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves. You see shelters are trying to make money to pay employee pay checks and don’t forget the board of directors needs to be paid too, so we don’t spend our funds to tranquilize the animal before injecting them with the lethal drug, we just put the burning lethal drug in the vein and let them suffer until dead. If it were not a “making money issue” and we had to have a licensed vet do this procedure, the animal would be sedated or tranquilized and then euthanized, but to do this procedure correctly would cost more money so we do not follow what is right for the animal, we just follow what is the fastest way we can make a dollar. Shelters do not have to have a vet perform their euthanasia’s so even if it takes our employee 50 pokes with a needle and 3 hours to get the vein that is what we do. Making money is the issue here not loosing money.

Then it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? Or used for the schools to dissect and experiment on? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right!

I hope that those of you who still have a beating heart and have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head, I deal with this everyday. I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and start educating the public. Do research, do your homework, and know exactly what you are getting into before getting a pet. These shelters and humane societies exist because people just do not care about animals anymore. Animals were not intended to be disposable but somehow that is what they are these days. Animal shelters are an easy way out when you get tired of your dog (or cat), and breeders are the ones blamed for this.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about taking their dog to a shelter, a humane society, or buying a dog. For those of you that care--- please repost this to at least one other craiglist in another city/state. Let's see if we can get this all around the US and have an impact.

Dumped Doberman and her pups in NEED

UPDATE at bottom of post

As many of you may know, we got a call about a doberman mom and her puppies yesterday and we had to act F-A-S-T! I picked up mama and 6 pups yesterday afternoon. Absolute sweethearts!! I took them to one of our primary vets, Deerfoot Animal Clinic. The pups are approx 11 wks old, averaging 11lbs each and have never had any vaccinations yet. We got all of them vaccinated asap and started deworming. They are staying there to be quarantined for 7-10 days to allow their first booster vax time to help and to monitor and make sure they are healthy. So far, no signs of any health issues.

Mama (Gwen) is scared but quickly bonds with you if you are baby talking and loving on her. She shows signs of being mistreated and her poor crop job someone did on her ears is sad BUT it's who she is now and we love her! She IS unfortunately heartworm positive but other than that seems to be a healthy girl. Gwen seems of great temperament, very loving, alittle while to trust, but very quiet and docile. So far from what we have seen she is great with kids and other dogs. Not sure about cats. She is getting a very much needed bath today and then going to a temp foster today. Updates on whether or not we'll need another foster to follow...

Mama's name is Gwen and babies are Brandon, David, Dylan, Brenda, Donna and Kelly. :) We will be getting pictures of each and posting them ASAP.

We need fosters and/or donations!

All Donations are tax deductible!!

1) Monetary donations can be sent to:
Peace Love & Dog Paws Rescue, Inc.
PO Box 43501
Birmingham, AL 35243

2) PAYPAL donations can be sent to our email address; "SEND MONEY" to PeaceLoveDogPawsRescue@gmail.com

3) Our vet will take donations by phone also, we need for someone to tell us they are donating by phone so we can keep up with everyone if they need a donation acknowledgment for their records. Deerfoot Animal Clinic 205-661-9680 (just let them know you are donating towards the Doberman Mix pups)

WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO HAVE THEIR SPAY AND NEUTER CERTS ALL DONATED!!

It was urgent that we rescue them and luckily they are safe!! We were full before these babies so boarding will be costly until we can find foster homes. We may have a rescue in South Alabama, A Stray Love Foundation, who will take two of the pups BUT we will need help with transporting them from Birmingham to possibly the Evergreen/Midway exit (halfway from Summerdale, AL). If you think you may be able to help in transporting 2 of these pups sometimes next week they will not be available to leave our vet for atleast 7 days, then please email me potts_alison@yahoo.com or peacelovedogpawsrescue@gmail.com and we can discuss details.

If you are interested in fostering for us, please go to our website and complete a foster application ASAP http://www.peacelovedogpawsrescue.com/app_foster_adopt.html

UPDATED PICS WITH THEIR NAMES ATTACHED COMING VERY SOON!!!!!

Thank you!!!
