PL&DPRescue's newest addition Lola PB Pekingese

Lola is new to PL&DPRescue, we had her vetted Friday 6/10/2011 and she’s approximately 4 years old, HW-, fecal -, spayed, up to date… she’s house broken, good with other dogs (ignores them mostly). BUT Lola’s rib cage is shaped oddly; she walks with a hop or skip. She also has a cyst on her hip that the vet will attempt to drain; she has some congestion on both lungs and an ear infection in one ear (neither contagious). She went to a temp foster over the weekend as the vet boarding environment was stressing her out and causing her breathing to be more labored and she slept the entire weekend, the foster had to wake her to make her potty & she didn’t eat until Monday morning. She’s on two antibiotics and eating much better now.

She has now been x-rayed and as it turns out she has suffered from a good bit of trauma at some point and now she’s healed improperly but nothing can be done at this point. Her ribcage was broken (very likely stomped, kicked or crushed) and she wasn’t given medical attention as it has healed completely incorrectly. Due to the way the ribcage has healed her heart is now leaning laterally to one side (should be in the) and at an odd angle causing her to have labored breathing because the heart is pushing on one lung. Pekingese are known for breathing issues and this only intensifies this inherited issue. She also has shallow hip sockets and floating patellas so she walks with a little hop.

The vet says there’s nothing that can be done but limit her stress levels, to not to let her get overly excited, over heated and possibly keep her at a healthy to slightly thin weight; the rescue feels she should be in a home with no children or older children that understand what precautions Lola needs; she may do better as the only dog or only one other dog too. She hasn’t been cat tested. She seems to crave human attention and affection. She rubs on furniture, walls and legs like a cat. She’s very sweet but needs support when being carried. She currently finds her crate as a safe haven for naps but prefers a lap above all else.
