Today Buddy was scheduled to be neutered but the vet called and said he had had a seizure. He has no history of seizures or any health problems so I looked into it on the Internet. Apparently, dogs can have seizures for many reasons.
Causes:
High stress (fights, fear, anxiety)
A reaction to some sedatives
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
Periods of excessive activity
Overheating (hyperthermia) /heat stroke
Increased intracranial pressure
Low blood glucose
Fevers
Intestinal inflammation
A major body organ failure
Trauma to the head
Ingested poisons or chemicals (including BHA and BHT in dog foods)
Nutrient deficiencies
Kidney failure and high levels of circulating uremic toxins
High blood ammonia levels
Canine distemper (most common in puppies)
AFTER A SEIZURE
Common signs you will notice after a seizure include: Pacing, Whining,Extreme hunger, Disorientation, Rare aggression, blindness. You may also notice difficulty walking, bumping into to furniture, getting stuck in corners, attempting to eat anything, and a persistent crying or whining. He may want to pace around, which is normal. Help him find a place and let him just walk it off. Your dog may want to pace for a short period or as long as 24 hours. Also offer small amounts of food and water, as some dogs may get hungry after having a seizure. The small bits of food may help calm him down.
You should contact your vet immediately after a seizure even if it is one time thing, the first time it has ever happened.
The vet thinks Buddy's was a stress level issue. But they will not neuter him because of the seizure so he'll just have to stay whole and we'll have to watch him closely for the next week or so.
As many dogs as my family has had in the past we've only had one other dog have a seizure and that was due to old age/organ failure. Watch your pets closely a seizure can be fatal!
